The reason you will throw it away instead of trying to salvage it is, the pieces are so small they will choke out your fire and you cannot maintain a steady even heat.
I buy these 40# bags of Lazzari Lump at my local Cash & Carry for $13.95 per bag.

If it's pretty much dust, you shouldn't need a compression device. I can remember, in harder times, filling small cartons with coal dust, soaking them and letting them dry out. When you put the whole carton on the fire, it melds into a block.

Might be worth trying.
